The Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation Church in Champlain, Quebec on the left above. Built in 1879 by the architect-entrepreneur Gédéon Leblanc, the church is the fourth to be used in the parish. The fine frescoes adorning the vaulted ceiling and the walls are the work of the painter François-Xavier-Édouard Meloche (Montréal 1855-1914). Nine magnificent old pictures hang on the walls, painted by Noël-Nicolas Coypel (1714), Frère Luc (1687) and William Von Moll Berczy (1810). As well as the 19 beautiful stained glass windows, visitors can admire sculptures by François Normand (1813) and Louis-Philippe Hébert (1882). The church is classified as an historic monument. The first occupants of Champlain settled in 1664 or 1665. There have been a first attempt to land granted August 16, 1643, but the distance and the Iroquois threat discouraged initiators. In 1664 or 1665, the first settlers to establish on the side of the lordship of Champlain. The following year (1666) will begin on concessions stronghold Hertel and in 1667 the fief Marsolet. Some of the first families come from Trois-Rivières, in the case of those of Antoine Desrosiers, François Chorel and Pierre Dandonneau.
The Basilica of Notre Dame - Cap de la Madeleine on the right above. Sitting on the shores of the St. Lawrence River and midway between Montreal and Quebec, Cap de la Madeleine is a place of peace and tranquillity, serenity and beauty. Its history goes back to 1634 when the area was first settled. The following year the first Jesuit Missionaries arrived to serve the settlers of the new village. The first little timber chapel was built here in 1659 on a small piece of land known as 'Blessed Mary's fief'. 5 years later it was to become the first of Canada's Catholic churches to be dedicated as a Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, a very new form of prayerful devotion to Our Lady at that time.
